Ian Schipper -
Ian Schipper (pronounced, believe it or not, “Skipper”)
grew up boating on the great lakes, before making a permanent move to the West
Coast 10 years ago. Ian has a Masters of Science in Chemical Volcanology,
with experience working on some of the worlds most active volcanoes. This experience,
combined with undergraduate studies in environmental engineering, and observations
made over years of outdoor adventures, has given Ian extensive knowledge about
the natural world. If he' s not watching whales or bears, Ian can be found
surfing, backcountry skiing, or cruising in his vegetable oil powered van.
Next winter, Ian will be starting doctorate studies on submarine volcanoes at
the bottom of the South Pacific Ocean, where he looks forward to meeting some
of his whale friends face-to-face, 20 thousand leagues under the sea! Voted last
season by his colleagues to be the most excited to spot a whale”, Ian will
be proud to lead you this summer on the naturalistic adventure of a lifetime to
show off some of the most beautiful scenery Canada has to offer, and to meet his
friends, the whales. There's our whale folks!”. |

Keith Phillips -
Growing up on Vancouver Island, Keith Phillips has been interested in environmental
issues since he can remember. This interest is reflected in the university
degree he obtained, Bachelor of Science in Geography. As he approached the
completion of his degree, Keith began helping in the Whale Research Laboratory
at the University of Victoria and volunteering for the Victoria division of the
Auxiliary Coast Guard. Once he completed his studies, he started work
in the Eco-tourism industry in Victoria as a Whale Watching guide. After
a couple of seasons in Victoria, he moved to the more rural community of Tofino,
which enabled him to work with a more diverse marine population. Keith
has just recently returned from Maui, Hawaii where he explored the possibility
of following the Humpback whales to their breading grounds and working in the
winters as a whale watching guide. In Maui, Keith also had the opportunity
to assist at the first Whale Quest Kapalua, a three-day Humpback whale educational
event, which was deemed so successful that it is now going to be held on an annual
basis. We are excited to welcome Keith to our team this season. When Keith
is not watching whales from the vessel you can often see him watching them from
his surf board. |
Brady Clarke -
Brady' s life has revolved around the ocean. After
graduating from high school he moved to the Sunshine Coast of Australia to surf,
dive, fish and sail. He managed a hostel on the beach, and spent everyday
in the ocean. He then returned to B.C. and studied Oceanography among other
subjects at the University of British Columbia. After a couple of years
in Victoria, the tropics lured him away once again. He crewed on yachts
and traveled throughout the Caribbean, made a memorable passage through the Panama
Canal and lived and worked on a yacht in Florida for 6 months. After a short
stint in Victoria, he moved back to Australia for another year. Since then,
Brady spent seven seasons as a skipper and naturalist guiding whale watching tours
out of Victoria. Brady has a deep appreciation and passion for the coastal ecology
of the British Columbian coast and has since relocated to Tofino where he will
be joining us as a guide this season. When Brady is not whale watching he
can usually be found surfing or taking photos. Check out Brady's images

Billy Wilton -
Billy Wilton grew up on Vancouver Island and has always had a keen interest in
being outdoors as an amateur naturalist, spending his summers as a youth camping
with friends and family. Little did he suspect, when he first moved to Ucluelet
in the Spring of 2000, that it was possible for him to be a professional naturalist
and work outdoors everyday! Billy loves to be out on the water and to see
the amazing diversity of both the marine and terrestrial wildlife in Clayoquot
Sound. Billy will show you as many interesting aspects of this area as possible,
from the extremely productive kelp forests of the coastal waters up to the whales
and the other charismatic megafauna. Between whale watching seasons, he
has been completing his B.Sc. in Biology focusing heavily on marine biology and
vertebrate ecology. This will be Billy' s sixth season working in Tofino'
s whale watching industry and he looks forward to another exciting season. |

Stephanie Hughes - Stephanie
Hughes first moved to Clayoquot Sound in 1992. She did her first ocean crossing
at the age of 19 as crew on a tall ship which inspired in her a profound love
of the ocean. She has a biology degree and has been involved in many research
projects around the world that span from seabirds to the rainforest canopy.
Stephanie feels that public outreach is an important element to conscious community
living in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. She is on the
board of the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust, and the Tofino Botanical Gardens.
Stephanie gives all our guests unique, educational and awe-inspiring experiences
interacting with wild species! Stephanie is currently taking a year off
from driving for her maternity leave. Congratulations Stephanie! |

Steve Lawson
-
Steve has been on the west coast since 1964. He has been a fisher and boat designer
and builder for years. He has run whale watching trips since 1985. Most
of Steve' s time is spent working across the country to protect and promote the
integrity of land, water and life. This is Steve' s life mission.
Steve helped to found environmental organizations such as the Friends of Clayoquot
Sound and Bear Watch BC. He has served as a Director of the Canadian Environmental
Network out of Ottawa. In the year 2000 Steve was awarded the Environmental
Ministers Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his contribution to the
protection and enhancement of BC' s environment and in 2002 the Medal of Honor
from Skies Above Foundation for environmental advocacy. He has worked on
films to protect Canada' s wild salmon stocks and to bring awareness to the harmful
effects of fish farming. He has worked to stop further mining in Strathcona Park,
to stop clear-cut logging in the ancient coastal forests of Clayoquot Sound and
to stop the trophy hunting of bears in BC. |

Matahil Lawson-
Matahil was born and raised in Clayoquot Sound on a nearby island. He has
worked in the whale watching industry since 1992. Matahil has delivered many sailing
vessels and ships along the Pacific coast; some as far as the Galapagos Islands.
He was captain of the research ship Ocean Warrior of the Sea Sheppard Conservation
Society in protest of whale killing by the Makah tribe of Washington State. Mat
once free dove to successfully free a Gray Whale from entanglement with a crab
trap during a spring migration. Matahil has spent two years studying naval
architecture and has designed and built several speed boats and sail boats with
the largest being a 47' aluminum sailing vessel currently under construction.
Matahil is a surfer, sailor, scuba diver and free diver. He also spends
his time rowing an ocean shell rowboat. Matahil has been working for the
Canadian Coast Guard station in Tofino as a rescue specialist and leading seaman
since 1998. He drives for Adventures Pacific on his days off. Matahil
is extremely knowledgeable about our area above and below the ocean's surface
and he loves to share this with our guests. |
