Grice
Bay, Tofino, BC: Sheltered Inlet Waters With Small Rocky Beach
Grice Bay Boat Launch and Kayaking Area
Many paddlers in ocean kayaks and canoes enjoy the sheltered waters of
Grice Bay for exploring. Launch at the Grice Bay boat ramp when the tides are
high and you may be lucky enough to see marine mammals such as seals and whales
and a great variety of birds. When the tides
are low, much of Grice Bay becomes a large expanse of mudflat and paddlers can
become grounded. Consult the tide tables for
mid to high tides before launching.
Grice Bay Mudflats
Mud-flats only form in the absence of strong waves. In sheltered Grice Bay, the
wave and tidal action is calm enough to allow mud to collect and form extensive
mudflats. All this mud is sometimes perceived as yucky and useless by human beings,
but other species wouldn't agree. Creatures that burrow in the mud call it home,
and creatures that eat those creatures call it an all-you-can-eat-buffet. Migrating
shorebirds, for example, depend on such habitats to "fuel-up" while
on their long migrations.
