With
the support of local First Nations, local communities, and each of the local,
provincial, and federal governments, in January 2000 Clayoquot Sound became designated
as the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (CSUBR). The CSUBR is a member
of the international network of UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves. The CSUBR designation
acknowledges aboriginal title and rights, and does not prejudice ongoing treaty
negotiations. |

| Eik Cedar Heritage Project | |
In
March 2002, nearly a year after residents began their tireless fight to save
this tree, Tofino Mayor and Council approved a steel support structure to be
fitted on the tree if the Tofino Natural Heritage Society could raise 100% of
the funds necessary to undertake the project. With over 75% of the funds raised,
work is set to begin on the installation of what many locally refer to as the "tree
girdle." The tree is still standing and the support structure has been fitted. |
