Adaptation

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, Rheagan Wallace, Tilda Swinton
This is a haunting movie - intense, original, bizarre, funny, intelligent, weird,
tragic and wonderful. It stays with you long after the credits, days possibly
weeks after. The acting is superb, the story totally unique - you don't want
it to ever end. I stopped trying to figure it out and just let it happen because
it was much smarter than I. Brilliant performance by Cage (shoulda won the oscar);
Streep proves she's still the best film actress today; and Cooper charms you
right into loving his character. A must see movie. Whew! |
|
Ed Wood

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Jeffrey
Jones
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton - it's gotta be a strange but intriguing movie right?
Right. The story of Ed Wood - actor, producer, and director - gives us a sense
of a good man, an interesting dresser and a visionary - even if his vision of
films didn't agree with those of, well almost everyone. Supported by a strong
cast of characters, black and white filming and a weirdness that Burton sets
up and Depp plays out this movie has you rooting for Wood. The man never gave
up and did receive recognition even if it wasn't along the lines of Orwell. |
|
The Fast & The Furious

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Hill Harper, Michelle Rodriguez
If you ignore the total lack of plot and the stupid things this movie promotes
you can get a lot of laughs from this teenage action flick. If you are offended
by street racing, stealing, violence and racial stereotyping you may not get
any enjoyment from watching this movie. But if you want to see what the kids
are talking about check it out. You may learn something and you'll certainly
see some souped up cars. And, weren't all your youth movies rejected by your
parents? I'm not saying it's right but it is so overdone that it is funny. |
|
Happiness

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Jane Adams, Dylan Baker, Lara Flynn Boyle, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cynthia Stevenson,
Louise Lasser, Jon Lovitz, Ben Gazzara, Jared Harris
I see Cynthia Stevenson and Philip Seymour Hoffman and I know I'm going to like
the movie. Not so fast. Like is a kind gentle word and this is no kind gentle
movie. It's strange, honest, dark, shocking and totally believeable - and actually,
it is gentle and kind also. Rarely do movies give every actor equal time to develop
their character but this one does - and that's a tall order for some. I'm not
sure what I felt at the end of this movie but I don't think it was happiness. |
|
Scent of Green Papaya

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Lu Man San, Tran Nu Yen-Khe, Truong Thi Loc, Vuong Hoa Hoi, Nguyen Anh Hoa
A feast for the eyes but a famine for your sense of storyline. I wanted to like
this movie but it just got on my nerves. The story of a little servant girl who,
after living amongst a family with a loving mother type, a bad little boy type
and a kind sister servant type, becomes the servant of a young, rich, handsome
composer. And guess what? He leaves his beautiful fiance for this servant, teaching
her to read and the finer points of life in the rich lane. Yeah right. Although
it was nominated for an Oscar move on over to Eat Drink Man Woman and get it
all. |
|
Eat Drink Man Woman

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Sihung Lung, Kuei-Mei-Yang, Chien-Lien Wu, Yu-Wen Wang, Winston Chao, Chao-Jung
Chen
Ang Lee does it again. A movie that gives you that Mike Nichols feeling. A poignant
story of a father and three daughters coming to terms with change. Beautifully
shot this film shows that the trials of family life are universal and things
don't always turn out as planned. Both parents and children can surprise each
other. But with good food, little announcements, and the unveiling of family
secrets this family manages to handle change quite well - as most families seem
to do after the fire works are over. |
|
One Night Stand

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Wesley Snipes, Nastassja Kinski, Kyle MacLachlan, Ming-Na, Robert Downey Jr.
Mixing the old story of a one night stand with a story of a friend dying of AIDs
is an unusual idea at best. This movie doesn't pretend to be something it's not,
which is mildly interesting, and only succeeds at that due to the quality of
the actors. |
|
Murder of Crows

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Cuba Gooding, Tom Berenger, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Eric Stoltz, Doug Wert
Too bad Cuba Gooding had to get involved with this movie. You think this movie's
has got to be good, it's got Academy Award winner Gooding but it never goes beyond
a superficial level and you have a hard time feeling any sympathy for the main
character. |

|
|
What Lies Beneath

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Harrison Ford, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dan Block, Wendy Crewson
Is she unstable or does Michelle Pfeiffer really hear and see things in the house
she and husband Harrison Ford have renovated? This movie had a few jumpy moments
for me but failed to develop into the really scary feature it should have been. |
|
Decent Ordinary Criminal

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Kevin Spacey, Linda Fiorentino, Peter Mullan, Stephen Dillane, Helen Baxendale,
David Hayman
A fun romp through the life of an Irish criminal who is part inventive thief,
part showman with an interesting home situation. Kevin Spacey brings his blend
of sexiness, charm and wit to this tale of a bunch of Irish thieves who pride
themselves on loyalty. |
|
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Sean Connery, Stuart Townsend, Peta Wilson, Shane West
Bad, bad, bad. Bad everything - acting, writing, effects, music. Can't complain
about the story line because they forgot to include one. Stuart Townsend gives
a good Johnny Depp impression that held my attention for a few seconds. |
Elysian Fields

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
James Coburn, Andy Garcia, Mick Jagger, Angelica Huston, Olivia Williams, Julianna
Marguiles
If it wasn't for James Coburn and Mick I would say keep away from this dud. Andy
Garcia is the poorest excuse for a gigolo ever to hit the screen. Who would get
turned on by this bumbling, sad and boring man? And what does his faithful wife
think he's doing all those nights away from home and family? This movie is bad,
really bad except for the lively Coburn and the mighty Jag. If there's nothing
else and you can keep your expectations low get this movie and shut it off after
the funeral. |
|
Mystery Train

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Masatoshi Nagase, Youki Kudoh, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Cinqué Lee, Rufus
Thomas, Joe Strummer, Steve Buscemi
I saw this movie many years ago and it's been stuck in a back corner of my brain
ever since. It's a movie of three stories all centring on inhabitants of the
same hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. A young Japanese couple on a rock and roll
pilgrimage, two women, with their own men problems, who meet in the hotel and
lastly a story that involves all the characters briefly and a violent drinking
spree. Crime, weirdness and black humour mix in this tale of foreigners in a
legendary American setting. |
|
Femme Fatale

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Antonio Banderas, Peter Coyote, Eriq Ebouaney, Edouard
Montoute
Ever since Body Double I've really liked Polanski movies. It's too bad about
this one. This movie almost comes together but never really does. It's overly
drawn out and while the acting is good the characters never really get to stretch
into their roles. While it's got the signature Polanski twist, this film seems
more like a film that wants to be a Polanski movie and just can't quite figure
out the secret. I know I'm more forgiving with lesser movies, but this one fails
to meet the standard of a RP film. Get Ninth Gate instead. |
|
Matrix Reloaded
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, Matt Mccolm,
Jada Pinkett Smith
The second of the Matrix trilogy filled with action, great action!, and some
very cool moments. Although the plot was thin (Fishburne's speech for yawn example),
I would see it again for Keanu and the suit man, the Oracle, the restaurant scene,
and CAM taking the keymaker for a bike ride. Did we mention that Ducati is the
official motorcycle of GoTofino.com ? This movie is still the thinking person's
action flick of the time. |
|
Dolores Claiborne
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Juldy Parfitt, Christopher Plummer, David
Strathairn
Even though Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Christopher Plummer are more
than enough to draw me to a movie I held off seeing Dolores Claiborne - why -
because it was written by Stephen King and well, you know. Stupid me. This is
a movie that defines the word chick flick - strong, self-reliant women who live
through hell and come out swinging. This movie has some powerful one liners in
it that I now live my life by. Enough said. |
|
Red Dragon
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes, Emily Watson, Harvey Keitel, Philip
Seymour Hoffman
Creepy indeed with solid performances from the actors. Hopkins and Fiennes are
totally believable as psychotic killers and Norton (sigh) is good as the in sync
detective. Philip Seymour Hoffman retains his favourite actor status playing
a weaselling journalist. While the movie was well done it was so slick that I
remembered it was just a movie and no nightmares followed. |
|
Standing in the Shadows of Motown

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Jack 'BlackJack' Ashford, Bob Babbitt, Johnny Griffith, Joe Hunter, Uriel Jones,
Joe Messina, Eddie 'Chank' Willis, and the spirits of Benny 'Papa Zita' Benjamin,
James 'Igor' Jamerson, Eddie 'Bongo' Brown, Earl 'Chunk of Funk' Van Dyke, Robert
White, Richard 'Pistol' Allan
Documentary and performance film of the Funk Brothers' saga in the soulful days
of Motown. See this movie! |
|
The Shipping News

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, Judi Dench, Scott Glenn, Gordon Pinsent, Cate Blanchett
If you think Quoyle had it tough growing up, you only know the half of it. This
movies traces Quoyle's pathetic life to his ancestral home of Newfoundland. The
people of The Rock seem to know more about him than he does himself. But that's
Newfoundland for you, my son. With his daughter, Quoyle finds out what so many
of us wonder - Why do Newfoundlanders keep coming home? |
|
Far From Heaven
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, Patricia Clarkson
If you ever wanted to experience the 50's this movie's the real thing - the lunching
ladies, the executive husbands, the style and rigid dos and don'ts. Technically
the film is a visual feast, a triumph of acting and a study of 50's film making.
The life of these upscale whites seem shallow but the emotions and fitting inside
the box remind us that living in the 50's was no picnic. Pass the daiquiris and
relax for a slow trip into the weird and normal past. |
|
America's Sweethearts

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal, John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hank Azaria,
Stanley Tucci, Christopher Walken, Seth Green
If you are really bored or need a nothing movie to work-out to you could watch
this movie. Zeta-Jones is perfect as a spoiled me-me-me actress, Crystal and
Green are good as the publicists keeping the story going, and Tucci and Walken
are fun. The stars seem to be having a good time and it's kind of fun to watch.
Just don't expect much humour or an interesting story and you'll be fine. |
|
Human Nature
Yes, No, Maybe: No
Patricia Arquette, Tim Robbins, Rhys Ifans, Miranda Otto, Robert Forster, Rosie
Perez
Loved Being John Malkovich, but couldn't get through this. Either it was so off
the wall I couldn't see it or it really is as dull as I think. If you're into
trying an independent - try this. After all if we support indie film imagine
the brilliant movies that will get made that otherwise wouldn't have a chance.
Remember when we supported indie music - Nirvana anyone? If you don't like this
movie, think of it as an investment. Note: Kaufman screenwriter for Being JM,
Human Nature and Adaptation. |
|
The Others

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Nicole Kidman, Christopher Eccleston, Elaine Cassidy, Fionnula Flanagan
Nicole Kidman is perfectly cast as a nervous, demanding, God-fearing mother who
tries to cope alone with two precocious children, an absent husband, and three
strange servants in a large country house filled with secrets and intruders.
The story keeps you guessing and not until the well conceived ending does the
truth come out. Watch it at night with the lights out. |
|
Bourne Identity
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, Julia Stiles
Salvaged by fishers from the ocean, a man wakes to find two bullet holes in his
back, a numbered Swiss bank account gadget in his hip and no memory. Not only
that but important people are trying to kill him. Based on Robert Ludlum's novel,
this movie never stopped. Damon continues to find films that showcase his boy
next door, with a wild twist, charm and talent. |
|
Run Lola Run
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Franka Potente, Moritz Bleibtrau, Herbert Knaup, Joachim Krol
Lola's lover has completely botched a handover of lots of money to people you
definitely don't want to mess with. Lola has 20 minutes to find $100,000 and
meet her boyfriend. How can she do it? Run Lola Run. German Franka Potente does
a brilliant job as Lola and if you haven't run a marathon you'll know what it's
like at the end of the movie. She also stars in The Bourne Identity with Matt
Damon. |
|
Bollywood/Hollywood
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Rahul Khanna, Lisa Ray, Dina Pathak, Moushimi Chatterjee, Kulbhushan Kharbanda,
Akshaye Khanna
People used to the culture of Bollywood find themselves surrounded by the culture
of Hollywood. What follows is a fun adventure for Rahul and the many women in
his life. A lively and light story blending two crazy cultures. |
|
Monsoon Wedding
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Vasundhara Das, Shefali Shetty, Parvin Dabas, Vijay Raaz, Naseeruddin Shah
This Bollywood film gives us a Delhi family celebrating with Indian rites and
coming to terms with universal secrets and fears in this story of a daughter's
wedding. Add a marigold-eating wedding planner and a shy family maid to the mix
you have romance, drama, comedy and fun. The most beautiful people in the world
bring us a very sweet movie. |
|
Atanarjuat
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Peter Henry Arnatsiaq, Madeline Ivalu, Sylvia Ivalu, Paul Qulitalik
Simply beautiful. The legend of Atanarjuat is about good and evil. The cinematography
of the Canadian North is stunning. The people amazing. A trip to a land and a
people most of us know nothing about. A true experience. |
|
Minority Report

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Peter Stormare, Samantha Morton, Meryl Streep
For a noir look at our possible future comes this Spielberg-Cruise thriller.
While I didn't find the plot did anything to stimulate the mind, the futuristic
scenes were thought provoking. This film blends belief in the system, a belief
in choice and the belief in one's self with both violence and, oddly enough,
humour. Cruise's acting is perfection as usual, but Samantha Morton as one of
the pre-cogs sets the psychological tension. |
Time Out

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Aurélien Recoing, Karin Viard, Serge Livrozet, Jean-Pierre Mangeot, Monique
Mangeot
Subtle and strange, this is a story of an everyman who loses his job and cannot
bring himself to tell his family. He creates a world of a prestigious job and
it unravels at the same time he falls deeper and deeper into his surreal deception.
Winner of the Don Quixote Award at the Venice Film Festival this is truly a work
of cinematic art. |
|
Frailty

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Matthew O'Leary, Jeremy Sumpter, Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey, Powers Boothe
Thriller with a good story. While I would have liked more tension throughout
the film (Paxton doesn't quite have the Hitchcock touch yet), it was a twisted
plot that took me by surprise. Bill Paxton and McConaughey get top billing but
the acting of 13 year old Matthew O'Leary as the young Fenton carried the story.
Lots of questions arise out of this film and both young actors deserve credit
as the key to this movie. |
|
Bread and Tulips
Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Licia Maglietta, Bruno Ganz, Marina Massironi, Giuseppe Battiston, Felice Andreasi,
Antonio Catania
An enjoyable film that blends light comedy with romance to tell a tale of a housewife
finding a new life. The acting, shooting and the romantic city of Venice make
this movie worth watching. The story may be flat for many of us used to thrillers
or witty vocal comedy, but watch it as entertainment and it's underlying message
and you may enjoy it But if you want real spunk pick up a copy of Shirley Valentine. |
|
Sidewalks of NY

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Edward Burns, Rosario Dawson, Dennis Farina, Heather Graham, Stanley Tucci, Michael
Leydon Campbell, David Krumholtz
Needing a Woody Allen fix? You've come to the right place. Edward Burns makes
a film about New York and people that picks up where Woody left off. Dry, insightful
and oddly uplifting - this film is inspiring not only for it's story but for
it's writer and director Burns. See this movie. |
|
Shanghai Noon
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Jackie Chan, Owen Wilson, Lucy Liu, Brandon Merrill, Roger Yuan
Jackie gives us a new look at Westerns that makes much more sense than the rootin'
tootin' gun slinger versions. Teamed up with Owen Wilson this buddy movie is
not afraid to go where no other buddy movie goes - Native woman coming to the
rescue, men falling into a bathtub together and the slave Chinese labour used
to build the railroad to name a few. Topped off, of course, by great marital
arts, this film is another Jackie classic. |
|
Banff Film Festival 2002

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Caught the Banff Film Festival offerings on the Sunshine Coast. While it had
one uplifting story about a man who lost his legs and a fine first effort by
a local 15 year old Coaster, the overall effect was one of disappointment. The
trip through Borneo seemed macho and disrespectful to the aboriginals, the white
water kayaking - seen it, the Tibet one posed and was more like a commercial
than anything else. Compared to last year's extravaganza this year is a bust. |
|
Insomnia

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Al Pacino, Hilary Swank, Robin Williams, Martin Donovan
A good story with two interesting main characters. The insomnia of Pacino adds
to this story of a murder of a young woman in Alaska (although keep your eyes
open because it was shot in BC). Al Pacino plays well as a strung out cop heading
up the case and running from his own demons. Robin Williams was downright creepy
as a mystery writer based in the small Alaskan town. The problem was with Hilary
Swank playing the intrepid rookie cop - she looked far too Hollywood to be believable
and that one bad casting decision ruined the experience for me. Too bad - it
had all the makings of a pretty good movie. |
|
Twin Town
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Dougray Scott, Dorien Thomas, Rhys Ifans, Llyr Evans, Sue Roderick
To quote the Austin Chronicle - "drug-fueled, nihilistic, free-for-all ride
through the streets and alleys of modern-day Swansea, South Wales". If you
watch this movie with the attitude that the above can be fun - you're ready.
It's a fast and furious ride with two brothers who don't really care for that
much - except keeping a wish of their Dad's. I liked this movie and if the drugs
and weirdness don't get to you, you might like it too. Others are split with
lots of critics giving it a miss and lots of friends thinking it is a fun ride. |
|
Changing Lanes

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Ben Affleck, Samuel L. Jackson, Toni Collette, Amanda Peet, William Hurt, Sydney
Pollack
What a great movie! Ben Affleck and Samuel L Jackson play two men finding out
exactly what they are made of. And just like life they are both good - and bad,
right - and wrong. I never knew which way this movie was about to turn because
it never turned towards the predictable. Two men, different backgrounds, anger,
questions and their version of doing the right thing. The casting is well done
with actors fitting their roles perfectly. A must-see movie. |
|
Death to Smoochy

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Robin Williams, Edward Norton, Danny DeVito, Catherine Keener
Danny DeVito brings a great sense of humour to this movie. Grab your popcorn
and soy butter and prepare for some black comedy. Williams, Norton and Keener
are a riot! (Not for children.) |
|
Bones of the Forest
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Native and non-native elders, environmentalists and retired loggers and corporates.
Heather Frise and Velcrow Ripper's 1996 Genie Award-winning documentary about
peoples' relationship with the land. Recording without commentary gives this
film an honesty that is refreshing. Bones of the Forest offers an illuminating
look at what has gone on, and is going on, in BC forests. |
|
The Score

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Robert De Niro, Edward Norton, Marlon Brando, Angela Bassett, Mose Allison
Robert De Niro and Ed Norton together make for a very good movie. And Marlon
Brando even at 300 odd pounds still has it. Keep your eye on the prize. |
|
Erin Brockovich
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Julia Roberts, Albert Finney, Scarlett Pomers, Aaron Eckhart,
Saw this the other night on TV. It's still as inspiring as the first time. A
Silkwood for these times with a happier ending — although many people got
very sick due to corporation greed and lies. Good one to remind us that this
goes on every day and usually the corporations get away with killing people for
no reason and very little questions are raised or compensation paid. It's up
to all of us to be vigilant in our watch and speak with our purchasing dollars. |
|
Beijing Bicycle

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Cui Lin, Li Bin, Zhou Xun, and Gao Yuanyuan
This story of a bicycle and two young men in China has won praise from many critics.
I found the film repetitive and never really felt involved. Nominated for 5 of
Taiwan's Golden Horse Award's and Winner of the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Bear)
and New Talent Award (Cui Lin and Li Bin) at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Obviously others saw a lot more than I did. Beautifully shot in the streets of
Beijing. |
|
Truth About Cats & Dogs

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Janeane Garofalo, Uma Thurman, Ben Chaplin
It's light, it's romantic, it's got footage that I fast-forwarded through but
it's also got three solid performances. Think Cyrano de Bergerac and you've got
the idea, change the main characters to females and you're there. I admit to
liking all three characters even though I cringed through some of the situations.
And seeing sultry Uma Thurman in a light role where she smiles a lot and acts
the empty-headed model-but-true-friend to perfection is a treat. |
|
Georgia

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mare Winningham
Two sisters who couldn't be more different. One a successful singer, husband,
children, living in the family home. The other a struggling singer dealing with
addictions and all that comes with it. While this is not a happy movie I liked
it - the acting was very good and while you could see people on all sides to
trying to make things right it just didn't work. Just like real life. Kudos to
the two actresses who make this movie work. |
|
The Anniversary Party

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Alan Cumming, Jane Adams, Jennifer Beals, Phoebe Cates,
Kevin Kline, Gwyneth Paltrow
Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming turn in a very interesting film about a
couple celebrating their anniversary. Reminded me of those parties where close
friends get together - good things happen, bad things happen but a coming together
in some way at the end reminds us that we are friends through it all. |
|
State and Main

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Alec Baldwin, Charles Durning, Patti LuPone, William H. Macy, Sarah Jessica Parker,
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Very light story about a movie taking over a small town. Good movie to watch
if you're doing something else - it's light, fun and if you take it as seriously
as the actors seem to (which is not very) you'll enjoy it. I do like Hoffman.
Alec Baldwin says it all at the end. |
|
Don't Say a Word

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Michael Douglas, Lorli Villanueva, Famke Janssen, Sean Bean
I like Michael Douglas, I like his movies, but how he got roped into this bomb
I'll never know. Skip it and get one of his others. I know you'll be tempted
but just back away from the video...slowly...and go directly over to The Game. |
|
The Game

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Deborah Kara Unger, James Rebhorn
Now this is a movie! It'll make you look over your shoulder. Douglas takes us
on a journey where things are never as they seem. Watch it with someone you trust
- of course you never know. |
|
Wonder Boys

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Michael Douglas, Robert Downey Jr., Katie Holmes, David Lean, Tobey Maguire,
Frances McDormand, Matt Ross, Richard Thomas, Rip Torn
Michael Douglas pulls off another one. Fun movie with a wicked cast. College
life from the other side proving profs are as crazed as the students. |
|
The Royal Tenenbaums

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Danny Glover, Owen Wilson, Bill
Murray, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Al Thompson, Alec Baldwin
Written by Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson this movie is quirky in a subtle and
off-beat way. Be in the mood and it's very funny. If you're not in the mood for
off the wall wait for a full moon. |
|
Bottle Rocket

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Ned Dowd, Shea Fowler
Written by, yes you guessed it Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. It came before the
Royal Tenenbaums and is just as weird and wonderful. Like the Tenenbaums see
this movie at the right time and it'll catch ya. Be ready. |
|
Rear Window

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey, Thelma Ritter, Raymond Burr
Still worth the price of admission. |
|
Lantana

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Geoffrey Rush Anthony LaPaglia Barbara Hershey Kerry Armstrong
Excellent story, cast and writing. It's a thriller that you believe could happen. |
|
Amelie

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Rufus, Yolande Moreau
Quirky and imaginative storytelling at it's best. French with English subtitles. |
|
Bandits

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Cate Blanchett
Somehow I managed to get through the first part but had to turn it off midway
through. You'd think with a cast like this it would be even a little good. |
|
Memento

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano
Yes! A movie like one you've never seen before. Starts at the end and works back
to the beginning. You don't know until the last scene what is really going on.
Director Christopher Nolan follow up to Following which is also very good. See
Memento first. |
|
Mulholland Drive

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Laura Harring, Justin Theroux, Naomi Watts, Brent Briscoe
David Lynch gives us another must see movie. You know it all connects but you're
just not smart enough to figure out the connections. Will keep you thinking and
talking about it for days. |
|
Pulp Fiction

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Amanda Plummer, Tim Roth, Phil
LaMarr, Burr Steers, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Maria de Medeiros, Ving Rhames,
Eric Stoltz, Rosanna Arquette, Christopher Walken, Paul Calderon
Quentin Tarantino's wild story of two hitmen recovering a briefcase and the lives
of others within a world the rest of us only see in movies. |
|
Vanilla Sky

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Tom Cruise, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Johnny Galecki, Kurt Russell,
Jason Lee
This movie had a lot of things going for it but it didn't take off for me. Cruise
and Cruz are unbelievable and a lot of the scenes are a bit too much. Liked Cameron
Diaz though and it was worth it for me to hear the words Tom Cruise yelled out
near the end. |
|
Legally Blonde
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis
So light some would call it fluff yet there's something about Reese Witherspoon
that cracks me up. And it's a movie you can watch with the whole family. How
often does that happen? |
|
The Fellowship of the Ring
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett,
John Rhys-Davies
Never read the book, don't like fantasy films - loved this - the story and the
cinematography are wondrous, the cast marvellous. |
|
One Night At McCool's

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Liv Tyler, Matt Dillon, Michael Douglas, John Goodman, Paul Reiser, Richard Jenkins,
Reba McEntire
This is a funny film with an all star cast. That's Michael Douglas as a bingo
playing cool dude in the the left of the photo. Everyone shines in this movie
as does the story and the writing. |
|
Being John Malkovich

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
John Cusack, John Malkovich, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener, Orson Bean, W. Earl
Brown, Mary Kay Place
Good story, well acted, funny and interesting. Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener
and John Cusack give great performances. Of course, it couldn't have been done
without the muse, John Malkovich. |
|
Serendipity

Yes, No, Maybe: No
John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale, John Corbett, Eugene Levy, Jeremy Piven, Molly
Shannon, Bridget Moynihan
Why did John Cusak do this film? Wondered about it after one minute, couldn't
bear it after 10. |
|
High Fidelity

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
John Cusack, Jack Black, Lisa Bonet, Joelle Carter, Joan Cusack
High Fidelity in both sound and mind are explored here for semi-grown up boys.
Worth it just to watch Jack dance. If you've ever felt intimidated walking into
a record store watch this and you'll be cured. |

The Big Kahuna

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito, Peter Facinelli
Three mid-western businessmen become changed men over a night of searching for
the big client. Plays like a stage play more than a movie. Death of a Salesman
for the new century. |
|
Zoolander

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Milla Jovovich, Jerry Stiller
Silly but harmless. Has potential to be fun but never really takes off. |
|
28 Days

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Sandra Bullock, Viggo Mortensen, Dominic WeStreet, Diane Ladd
Light and bright movie about a recovery program that Bullock is sent to for 28
days. Although this movie is stopped from going over the top in sweetness -it
still sets a too rosy picture about detox. But for all that it I like Bullock
and enjoyed the movie for what it is. |
|
American Psycho

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Christian Bale, Samantha Mathis, Willem Dafoe, Reese Witherspoon
Either this film had something interesting to say or it was just about expensive
clothes, skin care and business cards. Some gory scenes that I fast-forwarded
through but overall I liked the movie just because it wasn't the usual schlock
out of Hollywood. But it didn't interest me enough to figure out what it was
about. |
|
Flawless

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Robert De Niro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Nashom Benjamin, Rory Cochrane
Hard-ass NY cop takes music lessons from drag queen entertainer and learns we're
all alike no matter who we sleep with. This story could sink into the usual moral
fable but De Niro and Hoffman keep it on track and a fun watch. I like Hoffman,
what can I say, he's a very, very good actor. |
|
The Matrix

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, Julian Arahanga,
Marcus Chong, Paul Goddard
Did I say I didn't like sci-fi? Did I say I didn't like Keanu Reeves? Scratch
that. This movie has everything - action, thinking, strong women roles, good
soundtrack and a story that rocks. As I see it this is a true chick-flick. |
|
Way of the Gun

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Starring Ryan Phillippe, Benicio Del Toro,
Juliette Lewis, James Caan, Taye Diggs
Don't take your eyes off the screen for a second cause you'll miss too much.
There's a good story here and a lot of violence. The editing is superb and if
I had a fairy godmother I'd ask her to give me the talent to make a movie this
cool. |
|
Dogma

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Directed/Written by Kevin Smith Starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino,
Alan Rickman, Jason Mewes, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek
How a goofy comedy can get one thinking about the existence of god, the role
of religion and one's own life is still a mystery to me. This movie can be watched
on a superficial level or can seep into your consciousness for a deeper think. |
|
The Ninth Gate
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Johnny Depp, Frank Langella, Lena Olin, Emmanuelle Seigner
Good thriller with Johnny Depp. Before Depp started playing Johnny Depp in movies. |
|
Chocolat

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Lena Olin
Sweet movie if you forget about Johnny Depp. |
|
From Hell

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Johnny Depp, Heather Graham, Ian Holm
Too gory, sadistic and misogynistic for this reviewer but my cousin liked it. |
|
Affliction

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Nick Nolte, James Coburn, Sissy Spacek, Willem Dafoe
Don't let the photo fool you this is small town depressing reality - very depressing
reality. If you are a depressed psychology major you could probably watch it,
otherwise take a pass. |
|
The Mexican

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Starring Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts
Two good stars in a very badly written movie. This movie has an an okay concept
that could have been quite funny had the writing been even half way there. |
|
My Life As A House

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas, Hayden Christensen, Mary Steenburgen
Hollywood tearjerker about building a house and making amends. Great cast but
the story lacks style and substance. |
|
Traffic

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Salma Hayek, Dennis Quaid, Steven Bauer,
James Brolin, Don Cheadle, Erika Christensen, Clifton Colins Jr., Majandra Delfino,
Benicio Del Toro, Miguel Ferrer, Albert Finney, Topher Grace, Amy Irving, Tomas
Milian
Hard
hitting and realistic Michael Douglas and Benicio give exceptional performances
in their roles. Well written, well acted by all. |
|
The Pledge

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
Directed by Sean Penn
Starring Jack Nicholson, Robin Wright-Penn, Aaron Eckhart
Sean Penn takes Friedrich Drrenmatt's detective novella "The Pledge" and
makes a movie that is both subtle and hard hitting. Yes, it does play like a
very good student movie but in the world of slick Hollywood productions that
can be a relief. An all-star cast adds to the integrity of the film. Cameos by
Vaness Redgrave, Benicio Del Torro, Harry Dean Stanton, Mickey Rouke, Sam Shepard.
Addendum to this - went hiking the Stein by Lillooet and when we stopped for
gas I thought something looked earily familiar - it was the gas station used
in the Pledge and it's kept it's move persona. So if you've ever up there, look
for it. |
|
The Gift

Yes, No, Maybe: No
Cate Blanchet, Reeves, Giovanni Ribisi, Katie Holmes
Hilary Swank, Greg Kinnear
Let me say this right off the bat - I don't especially like Keanu Reeves as an
actor. But he was great as a violent red neck. Who would have thought? And that's
all I liked about The Gift. Cate Blanchet gives a credible performance as a fragile
clairvoyant, but the plot is thin, too thin. I found the some scenes cheap and
sensational in a tabloid way and the characters underdeveloped. |

Blood Simple

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
John Getz, Frances McDormand, Dan Hedaya, M. Emmet Walsh, Samm-Art Williams,
Deborah Neumann
From the beginning of the Cohen Brothers this one sets them off down the road
of strange. |
|
Fargo

Yes, No, Maybe: Yes
William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Frances McDormand, Peter Stormare
Liked this movie. Who can't like a movie when Frances McDormand's in it and in
this case she's brilliant. Must say the characters of her husband and the kidnapped
woman were a bit over the top for me but I guess that's what the Cohen brothers
are all about. |
|
The Man Who Wasn't There

Yes, No, Maybe: Maybe
Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand, Michael Badalucco
If you're depressed don't get this movie. |
